Africa Simulation Gold and Salt Trade

In history, we had a simulation about Africa, and how it's salt and gold trades worked. There were three parts to the simulation, the West Africans, who had the gold, the Soninke warriors and empire, and the people from over the mountains. The topic was that we had to make make a deal with the people over the mountains that didn't speak our language. This was called silent barter which was done by never contacting each other.
First, the West Africans, (us) had to travel down the river to where the Soninke warriors were so that we could put down a bet on what would be a good trade. Then the people from over the mountains came and decided the offer wasn't good enough. So then, we came back and decided what they had then offered was best. We went throught this simulation three times, and every time there was new people that got to go over the mountains and over the river, to go meet with the Soninke warriors and their leader. They were the ones that settled everything, and actually contacted the people to make the trade. The way people knew they had to come back was the drums, they played while the other tribe went on to go meet them.

Europe Simulation Vow of Silence

In medieval times, people were able to take the Vow of Silence so that they could be accepted into monasteries. They had to take a very silent vow and live as a monastery from five to seven years. During this time, no one could talk or else they would be kicked out of the monastery industry. During this time they would only have the clothes they were wearing which where very thin garments that didn't even keep them warm. They would be fed very little food, and they would work too much. When they weren't working, they would be in the church worshiping the gods and singing. Singing, was probably the only time you would have heard a person who was trying to become a monastery's voice, because of course they weren't able to speak. They had taken a vow of silence and they had to follow it, or they would pay the consequences. They also got very little rest, because they were always either working or in the church doing mass or singing. They lived a very simple life and if they tried doing something out of hand they could get a hand cut off, get kicked out of the monastery, or perhaps even worse. I don't know how they could have lasted five to seven years without speaking, I couldn't even last a day.
